Ways to make your workplace more eco-friendly
Smart employers know that sustainability isn’t just about having a more responsible attitude to the environment, but it can mean big savings on your bottom line too. Gaz-guzzling fleets of vehicles and energy-draining computers are a thing of the past, but what other ways are there to make your workplace more eco-friendly?
- Recycling ink cartridges
If you can’t make your office entirely paperless, you can do something about the ink cartridges you get through, by recycling them responsibly. Some suppliers will help you in your recycling efforts by making it easy for you to dispose of your empty cartridges by providing you with recycling boxes that can be ordered online, and picked up for free once they are full of empties. Check with your current provider and see what their policies are on recycling – many larger companies have committed to reducing their wastage through innovative design and manufacturing processes – so you can benefit from this too as a customer.
- Investing in sensor lighting
In larger offices where there are multiple meeting rooms, break rooms and corridors the lighting can be switched on all day without anyone passing through – unless you have sensor lighting installed. This clever lighting solution is estimated to reduce the cost of wasted electric by 30%, not to mention the reduced carbon emissions that accompany this.
- Energy rated electronics
Laptops, computers, printers, phones, projectors – it’s hard to run an office without a huge amount of tech in place, and when you’re paying for electricity this is a cost that can quickly mount up. Help to manage this cost and your impact on the environment by choosing the highest energy rated appliances you can. These will be rated A+ or higher and will help to ensure that not only is your new equipment great quality and spec, but they should cost less to run too by using less energy.
- Have a CSR policy in place
What is your company’s green policy? If you don’t have one, you really should. It doesn’t need a full team of people behind it dedicated to turning your company green, – but simply by documenting the activities and the goals you want to achieve with more sustainable business practices it will give your whole company a clearer focus. These changes need to come from the top down in order to make sure they are embraced by all employees, and it’s also a good idea to include a copy of it for any new start employees too.
- Bring some nature indoors
Did you know, certain plants can improve air quality indoors? These original green champions can remove toxins, and cleanse the air of pollutants – especially great if your office is temperature controlled with air conditioning which can leave the air a bit stale. Many of these plants are very low maintenance too – just a bit of water and positioned on your desk out of direct sunlight should keep them alive and well for a long time. We think they’re the perfect desk accessory!
