Recycling your Christmas cards this season
Sending and receiving Christmas cards is a must-have Christmas tradition, with millions of cards sent each year in the UK. This is obviously however a large strain on natural resources, but we would never want to replace or substitute this tradition for digital cards, as charities estimate that the sales of Christmas cards raises £50m each year for worthy causes. Plus, they look very cheerful and festive on the mantelpiece.
Instead, we would encourage everyone to recycle their cards after Christmas, or find new uses for them. Find out more about recycling your Christmas cards this season.
Where can you recycle your Christmas cards?
You can add your cards to your normal recycling bin at home, along with other card and paper items to ensure that no unnecessary Christmas card waste is sent to landfill. Alternatively, many retailers are recognising the need to be more environmentally responsible and as part of their corporate social responsibility policies, many Christmas card recycling bins can be found in major high street stores. This gives you the perfect opportunity to pop your old cards in while you’re having a browse through the January sales.
Making gift tags from your Christmas cards
Why not get a bit crafty with your Christmas cards in preparation for next year? You can cut the front of the card up into unique and personalised gift tags instead of simply throwing them away – and it will save you money next year too because you won’t have to buy new gift tags. Check out these simple ideas for some easy inspiration.
Buy cards made from recycled material
It doesn’t feel very reflective of the Christmas spirit to reduce the number of cards you send in an attempt to reduce the amount of cards in circulation, so instead try and limit your carbon footprint when it comes to buying Christmas cards by purchasing ones already made from recycled materials. This reduces the need for raw materials and reduces emissions required to process these materials – without having to decide who’s still on the Christmas card list or not.
If you’re planning to recycle your Christmas waste, don’t forget to check your recycling and bin collection dates with your local council over the festive period so you don’t miss the deadlines for pick up.
