Our Green Back-To-School Guide
As we approach the end of the summer, the back-to-school countdown has well and truly begun. It won’t be long before September is here, and the kids are embarking on a new school year, bags and books in hand.
Before you head out on a last-minute rush to buy any remaining school bits, why not consider using last year’s uniform, bag or stationery? As well as helping you to save money, this will also reduce the amount of waste you are sending to the landfill. At Regen Waste, we have some helpful tips in our green back-to-school guide to make this school year as environmentally friendly as possible.
Don’t Be So Quick to Buy A Brand-New Uniform
While it can be easy to pop into a school shop and purchase a brand-new uniform, this is not the best option for your purse or the environment! As children grow, they may even need more than one uniform each year meaning that too many uniforms are often thrown in a landfill and take years to decompose. Why not organise a uniform swap between friends or family or find out if your child’s school has a second-hand scheme? This will allow you to purchase pre-worn blazers or jumpers at reduced prices.
Find Out What Supplies You Have Before Buying More
Before heading out to the shops and stocking up on new stationery items, why not take a look around your home and find out what supplies you have that can be used again. Do you really need to purchase more pencils or a new school bag? Make a list of what you really need before you go out shopping and stick to it – this will help you avoid impulse buys, saving you money and reducing waste!
Buy Used Text-Books
As your child begins studying new subjects, they may be asked to purchase multiple text-books. Before you start buying these, you should check if any friends or family members have studied similar subjects and may be able to provide you with the books your child needs. If this is not possible, you may be able to find used textbooks or e-books online at a reduced price, so why not purchase one of these copies and save money as well as reducing paper wastage.
When it comes to back to school shopping, you should buy with purpose as this will allow you to save money as well as planetary resources. By following these easy tips, you will be able to begin the school year in a way that is environmentally friendly and kind on your pocket. Read more useful recycling tips from Regen Waste here.
