Re-Gen launch recycling awareness campaign

This month sees the launch of a year long awareness campaign by Re-Gen to help educate local businesses and residents on recyclable and non-recyclable waste. The press campaign sets out to show Newry and Mourne residents and business owners the possible effects if we don’t all take responsibility for our waste.

  Drama over waste As aRe-Gen are proud to announce that this year they are the main sponsors of the 27th Annual Lislea Drama Festival. The 2008 Festival aims to promote the local arts community within the area, once again demonstrating Re-Gen’s commitment to supporting the local community.

This relationship has not only helped N&MDC achieve its recycling targets, but it has also seen Re-Gen collaborate with them on a number of initiatives – including “Recycler of the Month” and “Recycling School Books.”

Re-Gen are also currently investigating Mechanical Biological Treatment, which if successful, would significantly increase the level of waste recycled in Newry, Mourne and beyond.

Council will be delivering blue bins to householders in Newry

Council will be delivering a further 10,000 blue bins to householders in Newry and Mourne before April '08. At the moment Council have 24,100 blue bins in operation are receiving approximately 150t of recyclable waste per collection. It is anticipated that in the year 08/09 approximately 5540t of recyclable waste will diverted from landfill using the blue bin scheme.

Aluminium industry: 14 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions

The International Aluminium Institute has reported industry survey results showing a 14 percent reduction in total direct greenhouse gas emissions from the production processes of primary aluminium, including bauxite mining, alumina refining, anode production, aluminium smelting and casting, between 2000 and 2005, despite a 20 percent growth in primary aluminium production covered in the survey.

Paper Recycling at a Record High in Europe

The European Recovered Paper Council (ERPC) is pleased to announce that the 'Monitoring Report 2006' of the 'European Declaration on Paper Recycling' confirms a record high for the latest paper recycling rate of 63.4%
