Regen sponsored short film is multi-award winner
We at Regen are very proud to see a locally made short film we helped to support is doing so well.
We recently helped sponsor the short film “Small Change” starring Nora-Jane Noone (from the Magdalene sisters). The film has gone from strength to strength since, winning awards and appearing at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival. The film makers sent us a thank you (below) outlining their success with the film.

“Small Change”
“ a bittersweet story about Karen (Nora-Jane Noone), a young single mother who has become bored with routine. Slot machines have become her secret thrill and addiction. With Christmas looming, a desperate hope for a big win sees her life spiral out of control.”
Following on from the films recent successful screenings at this years Galway Film Fleadh, and Corona Cork Film Festival, where Cathy Brady, the director won “Best Debut Irish Director”, “Small Change” has continued to go from strength to strength.
The film has seen success at:
- Encounters Festival in the UK (NAHEMI/Kodak Award for Best Cinematography),
- The Royal Television Society Students Awards Ireland Centre (Best Fictional Short),
- The Jameson Dublin International Film Festival (Dublin Film Critics Circle Award Best Short)
In addition to these great wins for the film, the filmmakers were delighted to hear that “Small Change” had been selected to officially screen at this years Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, USA.
Tommy Fitzpatrick, the short films producer has said: “Of the original 6400 applicants for the International Short Film section of Sundance, for “Small Change” to be selected for the final programme says an awful lot about the quality of filmmaking talent emerging from both the National Film School at IADT Dun Laoghaire, and the Irish film industry as a whole at this time.”
In late January of this year, Cathy, Tommy and the films main actress, Nora-Jane Noone (The Magdalene Sisters) flew out to attend the festival where they were overwhelmed by the positive reaction from not just industry people but also the general public aswell. Cathy was particularly amazed by the feedback from people: “there were at least 4 or 5 instances where we were stopped by people in the street, who on seeing our movie credentials around our necks had to stop us and tell us how much they loved our film, and wished us all the best in the future. It really was humbling.”
Unfortunately “Small Change” didn’t win in its category but it stood up brilliantly against the competition from both domestic US and other international short films. But what little disappointment the filmmakers experienced, was soon forgotten by the overall festival experience at Sundance, and also by a little bit of news they received just before they departed for the US.
In early January, the filmmakers were delighted to be notified that the film had been nominated for Best Short at this years Irish Film and Television Awards IFTAs. Soon after their return from Sundance, they attended the awards ceremony in mid-February in the Dublin Conference Centre, where even though facing stiff competition from other short filmmakers, “Small Change” triumphed in the end and won the Phillips Best Short Award.
So it is that the production has seen some amazing results while doing the festival circuit. There is still other 6-9 months left ahead of it doing the festival tour, where is has yet to screen at the Go Short Film Festival in the Netherlands, The Tampere Film Festival in Finland, The Jameson Belfast Film Festival, the list goes on…
Cathy the director and Tommy the producer would like to take this opportunity to offer their sincerest thanks to Regen, who on the lead up to shooting the film came on board as a sponsor. It says an awful lot about Regen that they took the time to listen to the filmmakers when approached, saw the potential in the story to highlight certain social issues that are not usually covered in films, and took the chance in sponsoring the production. They are forever grateful to the company and hope it continues to go from strength to strength, just like the little film they helped nurture.

Newry & Mourne District Council Press Release 26/11/2010: Proof that pester power works!
Mrs Alicia Garvey of Slate Quarry Road, Cullyhanna has been chosen as November’s recycler of the month. She has won £50 sponsored by REGEN waste a local company that process the councils blue bin waste. Alicia, who is helped by her 3 children to fill her blue bin to capacity every fortnight, said, “they recycle so much we could do with a 2nd blue bin!” However any materials that don’t fit in she takes them to her local Household Recycling Centre along with her glass and clothes.
Officers this month, found that most bins set out had the correct materials inside. However, householders are reminded that no food waste, glass, tetra paks, plastic bags or packaging, apart from plastic bottles, should go into the blue bin. Your bin man will not collect a contaminated bin.
Anyone who uses his or her blue bin correctly is eligible to win. This means that the blue b
in is not contaminated, all material is clean, dry and loose, and where appropriate lids are removed and containers are washed and squashed.
Householders can recycle empty aerosol cans and large metal tins in their blue bin. Empty aerosols can be recycled with other food and drinks cans. Just make sure that they are completely empty but do not pierce or squash them. If possible remove any plastic parts that come off easily such as the lids. Where possible large metal tins should be squashed.

29th November 2010 - Environment Minister Visits Regen Waste

Colin Doherty (Director of Regen) demonstrates the high quality output of the facility to Northern Ireland Minister of the Environment, Mr. Edwin Poots.

NI company Re-gen Waste says recycling is vital to the NI economy because it can save money and create jobs. Managing Director Joseph Doherty was speaking at the company’s Newry plant, during a visit by Environment Minister Edwin Poots.
“We are delighted to welcome the Minister to Re-Gen’s dry recycling facility. Companies like ours make a practical contribution to the Northern Ireland economy, as well as hitting “green” targets. There is a concrete financial value when every tonne of paper recycled saves the energy required to heat a home for 6 months and prevents 17 trees being cut down. Recycling isn’t just waste management – its proper resource management.”
“Here at Re-Gen, a state-of-the-art automated sorting line is overseen by a team of up to 85 operatives. They guarantee that all materials passing through the facility are separated to the highest of standards, thus reducing the amount of waste going to landfill by up to 30%”.
Mr Doherty added that it is “cheaper to recycle paper & aluminium than it is to create new materials. Recycled drinks cans are worth up to £840 per tonne, creating jobs and making a significant contribution to the local economy.”
Mr Doherty says that recycling is not just a matter of managing waste but of managing resources effectively. “Our roots are in construction, so we take a pragmatic approach. We researched the best global technologies available, used these to design and build the plant ourselves and have created a real and viable business. We’ve been hands-on and focused on the future all the way. Now we’re working with our clients and others to reduce waste efficiently.”

Regen Waste is pleased to be working with year 13 students from the Assumption Grammar School, Ballynahinch.
This project is part of our ongoing commitment to the “Sentinus - Team R+D” initiative. Sentinus - a not for profit educational charity - brings real world experience into the classroom and has a particular focus on promoting “Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics” (STEM) as career choices. Through the programme the students are encouraged to engage with companies to assist in solving actual commercial problems. In this instance these young engineers are looking at how we might refurbish worn out “V” screen discs. Ultimately we hope to extend the life of the discs leading to both commercial savings and improved environmental performance.
This is our second “Sentinus - Team R+D” project and it complements a wide range of educational and promotional activities undertaken by the company including environmental and careers promotions.

Re-Gen Support Sentinus “STEM” Initiative - 21st April 2010.
Colin Doherty, in his role as a “STEM Ambassador”, worked with Year 13 pupils from our Our Lady’s Grammar School in Newry on a
“Sentinus - Team R+D” project which looked at resolving a common problem within the recycling industry – unraveled videotape or
similar materials catching and fouling conveyor belt bearings.
Sentinus - a not for profit educational charity - brings real world experience into the classroom.
The students are encouraged to engage with companies to assist in solving actual commercial problems.
The organization has a particular focus on promoting “Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics” (STEM) as career choices.
Commenting on the project Colin said:
“It was great working with such an enthusiastic group of young engineers. They approached their tasks with discipline and applied
sound scientific and engineering principles when seeking a solution to this problem. It also gave me the opportunity to interact
with staff from the Mechanical Engineering Department at QUB who acted as the student’s co-mentors on the project. The solution they came up with was both practical and cost effective”

Joseph Doherty visits Novelis in Warrington – 6th May 2010
Joseph Doherty continued his “Focus on the customer” visits with a trip to Novelis in Warrington.
We have enjoyed a fruitful relationship with Novelis and Commercial Manager Keith Guest stated:
‘Novelis Recycling has been working with Re-Gen Waste for over 5 years. The deliveries of aluminium cans
that come in to the Novelis reprocessing plant in Warrington from Re-Gen Waste are of a consistently high
standard and excellent quality, meaning that they reliably meet Novelis Recycling’s strict specifications.’
‘At Novelis we maintain a stringent specification for deliveries because this is essential in ensuring that
the cans we receive are of the right quality to maintain our ‘close loop recycling’ system. It is vital that
our suppliers maintain quality and reduce the presence of contaminants within the loads being sent to Novelis.
The activity carried out at MRFs, such as the one at Re-Gen, is fundamental to that process and we are always
happy to recognise and support suppliers such as Re-Gen Waste who dependably meet this specification through
the quality procedures they have put in place.’

“I enjoy these visits and they are important to us as a business. Whilst we at Re-Gen make extensive use of email,
the internet and other technologies - it’s hard to beat talking to our customers face to face. Visiting waste
